How to Treat Chafing in the Groin Area: A Men's Guide

How to Treat Chafing in the Groin Area: A Men's Guide

To treat chafing in the groin area: wash gently with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap, pat the area completely dry, apply a thin layer of plain petroleum jelly or zinc oxide cream, and switch to loose, breathable underwear until it heals.

Groin skin is thinner and stays damper than skin anywhere else on your body, so it chafes faster and complains louder, but it also responds quickly to the right care.

One thing before the routine: groin irritation in men is the one place where chafing regularly gets confused with jock itch, and the treatments are different. We will sort that out below.

How do you treat groin chafing, step by step?

  1. Wash it gently. Lukewarm water, mild fragrance-free soap, your hand rather than a washcloth. You are removing sweat, salt, and bacteria from damaged skin, not scrubbing a pan.
  2. Dry it completely, including the folds. Pat, never rub, and get the creases where your leg meets your body properly dry. Trapped moisture is what turns one bad day into a bad week. A minute of airflow before dressing helps more than it sounds like it should.
  3. Apply a plain barrier. A thin layer of petroleum jelly or zinc oxide cream (plain diaper rash cream works) protects the skin from fabric and from itself. Plain means plain: no fragrance, no menthol, no tea tree, nothing that tingles. Tingling on raw groin skin is not a sensation you want to discover.
  4. Change the environment. Loose, breathable underwear during the day, looser or nothing at night. Skip the gym for a day or two. The skin heals exactly as fast as you stop irritating it.

Mild cases feel dramatically better after one protected night. The full overnight routine, including what never to put on raw skin, is in how to heal chafing overnight.

Is it chafing or jock itch?

This is the question that decides whether your treatment works, because barrier ointment helps chafing and does nothing against fungus:

Groin chafing Jock itch (fungal)
Feels like Stinging, burning on contact Itching, sometimes burning
Looks like Red or raw patch where skin rubs Red patch with a defined, often scaly or raised border
Location Inner thigh crease, where friction happens Groin folds, can spread to inner thighs and buttocks
Gets better with Rest, dryness, barrier ointment Antifungal cream, dryness
Gets worse with More friction Time, moisture, and petroleum jelly sealing it in

The tell: chafing stings and maps exactly to where things rub, jock itch itches and creeps outward with a visible edge. If it itches more than it stings, or it is not improving after two or three days of chafing care, switch to an over-the-counter antifungal and keep the area dry. Our stages and warning signs guide covers the full lookalike lineup.

What is safe to put on groin skin?

Safe: plain petroleum jelly, zinc oxide cream, unscented barrier balms.

Not safe on raw groin skin: rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, scented lotions, menthol or "cooling" gels, undiluted essential oils, and powder on broken skin. Most of these sting immediately, and all of them slow healing. If a product's selling point is a sensation, keep it away from damaged skin.

How long does groin chafing take to heal?

Mild redness: 1 to 2 days with proper care. Raw skin: 3 to 5 days. Broken or weeping skin: up to a week, and that is the version worth showing a doctor if it is not clearly improving. See a doctor promptly for spreading redness, swelling, pus, or worsening pain after two days of care; the Cleveland Clinic's chafing guide lists the red flags.

How do you stop groin chafing from coming back?

  • Upgrade the underwear. Moisture-wicking synthetic boxer briefs with flat seams beat cotton in every category that matters here. Cotton holds sweat against the exact skin you are trying to protect.
  • Fix the swimwear. Mesh-lined swim trunks are the summer cause nobody suspects: a scratchy netting grinding damp skin for hours. The whole story is in why swim trunks have mesh lining, and the fix is a soft built-in liner, covered in our compression liner guide.
  • Dry properly after every shower and swim. The thirty seconds you spend drying the folds is the cheapest prevention that exists.
  • Balm before long days. Hikes, runs, travel days: barrier up the crease before you start.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put Vaseline on groin chafing?

Yes, plain petroleum jelly is one of the best options for chafed groin skin: it protects, prevents fabric from sticking, and supports healing. Just confirm it is chafing and not jock itch first, because sealing a fungal rash under petroleum jelly makes the fungus happier, not you.

Does jock itch cream help chafing?

Not really. Antifungals treat fungus, and chafing is friction damage. It will not hurt intact skin, but it wastes days you could have spent on barrier care. Match the treatment to the problem using the table above.

Why does my groin chafe when I run?

Sweat plus repetitive leg movement plus a seam or skin fold in the wrong place. Runners fix it with snug quick-dry compression shorts, flat seams, and balm on known hot spots before the run, not after.

Does trimming help prevent groin chafing?

It can. Very short stubble regrowing can itself be abrasive, so if you trim, keep it maintained rather than cycling between smooth and stubble. Never trim or shave over already-chafed skin; let it heal first.

When should I see a doctor about groin chafing?

If it is spreading, swelling, oozing, smells bad, or hurts more after two days of proper care. Also if rashes in the groin keep returning despite good habits, since recurring fungal infections and skin conditions like intertrigo need diagnosis, not more Vaseline.

Who wrote this

We are Gabriel and Isaac Lindh, two Swedish brothers building Nordic Dudes. We have spent months developing men's swim shorts: fabrics, liner materials, samples, fit, manufacturing. We started because we thought the old mesh liner could be better. That turned out to require learning far more about the inside of men's swim trunks than two normal adults should ever know. We do not sell shorts yet. When we do, there will be no net in them.
