What Does Chafing Look Like? Stages and Warning Signs
Chafing looks like a red, irritated patch of skin in a place where skin rubs against skin or fabric: most often the inner thighs, groin, bum or underarms.
Early chafing is pink and stings lightly. Advanced chafing is raw, shiny, and painful to touch. Broken, weeping, or crusted skin means it has gone past chafing into territory that needs real care.
Here is how to read what you are looking at, stage by stage.
What are the stages of chafing?
Stage 1: Pink and tender. The skin looks lightly flushed, like a mild sunburn in a stripe or patch. It stings faintly when touched or when you keep walking. At this stage you can fix it in one night: see how to heal chafing overnight.
Stage 2: Red and angry. Clearly red, warm to the touch, and it burns during movement and in the shower. The skin surface is intact but stressed. One to three days of care.
Stage 3: Raw and shiny. The top layer of skin has worn away. The patch looks glossy or wet, hurts constantly, and stings sharply in water. This is the stage that makes people walk funny. Three to five days, minimum, and strict friction avoidance.
Stage 4: Broken and weeping. Cracked, bleeding, or oozing skin, sometimes with crusting. This is an open wound. Clean it, protect it, and watch it closely, because open skin is where infection starts.
How do you know it's chafing and not something else?
This is the question that matters most, because the treatments differ:
| What you see | Likely culprit | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Red patch exactly where skin rubs, stings, no bumps | Chafing | Barrier ointment, no friction |
| Clusters of tiny prickly bumps where you sweat | Heat rash | Cooling and dry air, not ointment |
| Red, itchy patch with defined scaly edges, often groin folds | Fungal (jock itch) | Antifungal cream, keeping dry |
| Bright red raw patch deep in a skin fold, sometimes smelly | Intertrigo | Drying, barrier, sometimes antifungal; a doctor if persistent |
| Painful red area that is swelling, spreading, or warm | Possible infection | A doctor, promptly |
The location logic helps: chafing lives where friction lives. If the irritation sits somewhere nothing rubs, or it itches more than it stings, think beyond chafing.

What are the warning signs that chafing is infected?
See a doctor if a chafed area shows any of these:
- Redness spreading beyond the original friction zone
- Swelling, or skin that feels hot compared to nearby skin
- Yellow crusting, pus, or cloudy fluid
- Pain that increases after two days of proper care instead of decreasing
- Fever alongside any of the above
Ordinary chafing improves fast once friction stops. Anything trending the other direction after 48 hours is your cue to stop self-treating. The Cleveland Clinic's chafing guide lists the medical red flags in more detail.
How do you treat each stage?
Stages 1 and 2: gentle wash, pat dry, plain petroleum jelly, friction-free rest. The full protocol is in how to heal chafing overnight, and the mid-day version is in how to get rid of chafing fast.
Stage 3: same protocol, stricter friction avoidance, and skip tight clothing entirely until the shine is gone.
Stage 4: clean gently, use a barrier, consider a non-stick dressing if clothing must touch it, and monitor for the warning signs above.
And once healed, fix the cause. Most recurring cases trace to skin-on-skin thigh contact or abrasive swimwear, both covered in our inner thigh chafing guide.
Frequently asked questions
What does chafing look like when it starts healing?
The red fades toward pink, the sting dulls to tenderness, and raw areas develop a dry, sometimes flaky surface as new skin forms. Do not peel the flakes.
Does chafing leave dark marks?
Repeated chafing in the same spot can leave darkened skin, called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. It fades over weeks to months once the friction stops for good.
Can chafing look like a rash?
Early chafing resembles a plain red rash, but it always maps to a friction zone and stings rather than itches. Itch-dominant rashes with bumps or scaly borders point to heat rash or fungus instead.
What does chafing look like between the legs?
A red or raw stripe along the inner thighs where they touch, often symmetrical on both legs, sharpest at the point of maximum contact. Details and prevention in our inner thigh chafing guide.

Who wrote this
We are Gabriel and Isaac Lindh, two Swedish brothers building Nordic Dudes. We have spent months developing men's swim shorts: fabrics, liner materials, samples, fit, manufacturing. We started because we thought the old mesh liner could be better. That turned out to require learning far more about the inside of men's swim trunks than two normal adults should ever know. We do not sell shorts yet. When we do, there will be no net in them.
