Chafing on Your Bum: Why It Happens and How to Fix It

Chafing on your bum happens when sweat, wet clothing, or long hours of sitting and movement rub the skin.

It is one of the most common and least discussed kinds of chafing, because nobody wants to bring it up. We will bring it up. It is fixable.

Why does your bum chafe?

The usual suspects, in rough order of guilt:

  • Sweat that cannot escape. The area is warm, covered all day, and poorly ventilated. Sweat sits, softens skin, and dries into abrasive salt.
  • Wet swimwear. Sitting around in damp trunks after a swim is the summer classic. Wet fabric plus a beach chair plus time equals raw skin.
  • Long sitting. Road trips, flights, desk marathons. Pressure plus small constant movements rub the same spots for hours.
  • Cycling and running. Repetitive motion against a seam or saddle. Cyclists know this enemy well enough that they invented padded shorts for it.
  • The wrong underwear. Cotton holds sweat against your skin, and bulky center seams sit exactly where you do not want a seam.

How do you treat a chafed bum?

The same protocol that works everywhere else: gentle wash, pat completely dry, thin layer of plain petroleum jelly, loose clothes, and time off from whatever caused it. We wrote the complete step-by-step, including what NOT to put on raw skin, in how to heal chafing overnight.

Two location-specific additions:

  1. Dry deeply. Between-the-cheeks moisture hides. After showering, pat dry thoroughly, and give it a minute of airflow before dressing.
  2. Watch for something that is not chafing. Persistent itching, burning, or a rash that spreads may be intertrigo or a fungal issue, which need antifungal treatment, not petroleum jelly. If it does not improve in a few days, see a doctor.

How do you prevent butt chafing?

Situation Fix
Beach and pool days Change out of wet trunks fast; rinse off salt water
Long sitting (travel, desk) Moisture-wicking underwear, stand and move hourly
Cycling Padded shorts, chamois cream, no cotton anywhere
Running Longer compression shorts, balm on known hot spots
Every day Skip bulky center seams; synthetic wicking fabric over cotton
Cotton boxer briefs next to moisture-wicking synthetic boxer briefs in comparison
Left: holds sweat. Right: moves it away. Choose accordingly.

The two upgrades that fix most cases: get out of wet clothes fast, and switch from cotton underwear to a moisture-wicking synthetic. Cotton is the roommate who never does the dishes: fine until conditions get hard, useless when they do.

Swim trunk owners: the mesh netting inside cheap trunks makes everything back there worse when wet. We explained the whole netting problem in why swim trunks have mesh lining, and what the better liner design looks like in our compression liner guide.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my bum chafe when I walk?

Sweat accumulates there and the skin folds rub with every step. Dry the area well, use a thin barrier of petroleum jelly before long walks, and wear wicking underwear. If it stings sharply during exercise, a dab of anti-chafe balm before you start prevents most of it.

Is baby powder good for butt chafing?

On intact, dry skin, powder can help absorb sweat before chafing starts. On already-raw skin or once you are sweating heavily, it cakes up and makes friction worse. Barrier ointment beats powder for anything already irritated.

Why do I get chafing there only in summer?

Heat means more sweat, more time sitting in damp swimwear, and more walking. All three multiply friction. Winter removes the moisture, which removes most of the problem.

Can hemorrhoid cream help chafing?

It is not designed for friction damage and often contains ingredients raw skin does not need. Plain petroleum jelly or zinc oxide barrier cream (diaper rash cream) are better matched to the job.
